BACKGROUND
The AAD Youth Development Programme will be in hanger 4 with Government Initiatives and will be opened over the 5 days of the show (Trade days and Public days).
To help raise awareness in the Defense and Aerospace Industry, AAD has created a Youth Development Programme, that will provide a number of students, who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at school and at tertiary level in Science and Technology the chance to get to know how the industry and relevant government institutions.
We will be inviting schools and tertiary students to participate on the AAD Youth Development Programme from 9 provinces in South Africa and we will be hosting over 2000 students at AAD 08. We will have a science competition as from 31 January 2008 and closing date July 2008 form more information Please navigate to http://www.nydt.org/home.asp?pid=972. We will have 30 judges and only the best 100 students from the 9 provinces will be participating at AAD Youth Development Programme.
We will have cash prizes, bursaries as well as gadgets. The aim is to encourage and inspire the entrants to apply their minds creatively to the questions. The students can use the money to further their studies
This 5th installment of Africa Aerospace and Defence will again be taking place at AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town over the period 17 – 21 September 2008 and will again feature three trade days and two public days.
AIM
To create awareness, interest and encourage universities and previously disadvantaged science and technology secondary schools (Dinaledi School) in the aerospace and defence environment.
Various elements of the AAD Youth Development Programme will include the following:
- Competition – pre AAD, across the nine provinces, with finalist attending the show
- Targeted university students in the various engineering faculties
- Model building competition – on site
- Various simulators will also be on show for demonstration
- Recruitment and career guidance centre
- Theatre in which various DVD’s will be shown as well as workshops held./ presentations given
As part of the Youth Development Programme we are pleased to inform you that we will have various simulators on show for demonstration on the science behind the simulators and how they operate and what they can do i.e. Flight simulator, Truck driver simulator, GBADS simulator and/or shooting simulator
OBJECTIVES
- To promote local community involvement and AAD Youth Development Programme
- Increase awareness, career opportunities in the Aviation and Defence industry and in the SANDF
- Involving industry related companies to participate on the programme
- To encourage the Department of Education, Department of Science to expose students/youth of South Africa in the defence and aviation industry
- To encourage participation from schools and universities
- Giving companies opportunities to recruit potential students for in service training programs or bursaries

Chris A. Hadfield (Astronaut from Canadian Space Agency) will give a lecture/presentation at the Youth Development Programme in 2008 at AAD
Students Competition
This will be done through out the 9 provinces
We will then get 6 students from a province that will form a team and 1convener from the provincial government
Will run the competition from the 31 January 2008 till July 2008 and judge in August 2008
Sms competition for the general people at the exhibition
