- Tshwane has a population of more than two million people who have on average the highest educational level in the country. Tertiary institutions include one of the world's biggest distance university, University of South Africa (UNISA), the University of Pretoria with its world recognised high performance centre and the Tshwane University of Technology. Research institutions include the world-renowned Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the National Research Foundation.
- The natural features of Tshwane range from 2 000 million-year-old granite rocks to the 220 000-year-old meteorite crater, the Tswaing Crater – one of the world's best-preserved meteorite sites.
- The most widely used home language in Tshwane is Sepedi (Northern Sotho), followed by Afrikaans, Setswana, Xitsonga, isiZulu and English. South Africa's rainbow nation speaks 11 official tongues, yet flies one official flag.
- Tshwane is a cultural city with a variety of museums, monuments, historic buildings and art centres. The Pretoria Art Museum hosts the largest South African art collection.
- Tshwane makes provision for physically impaired travellers who want to experience the capital city's tourism treasures. Apart from numerous accommodation and restaurant options for the mobile-impaired traveller, the Transvaal Museum, the National Cultural History Museum, the Pioneer Museum, the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum, the South African National Museum of Military History, the National Botanical Gardens and the Voortrekker Monument are all accessible.
- Tshwane is the economic gateway to South Africa, Africa and the world at large. Three major automotive manufactures and assemblers, who produce almost 40% of locally manufactured passenger vehicles, are situated in Tshwane.
- The main economic sectors in the Municipality’s area are community service followed by finance and manufacturing. The largest sub-sector within manufacturing is metal products, machinery in metal products, machinery and household appliances, followed by the manufacturing of transport equipment. All the major banks and financial services institutions have offices in Tshwane.
- Tshwane is a "smart city" – a leader in education, research and technology, electronics and information technology as well as defence design and construction. 85% to 90% of all research and development in South Africa is conducted in Tshwane and the City is home to the country's first science park – the Innovation Hub, which promotes innovation in high-tech enterprises.
- Tshwane is home to a long list of research and development institutions, including Armscor, the Medical Research Council, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and a number of universities. These centres support Tshwane’s claims of being the research centre of the country.
- Tshwane is often referred to as the Jacaranda City, because of the 70 000 jacaranda trees that line our streets and blossom in October. At all times, Tshwane is a remarkably beautiful city. The Blue Drop Report 2011 gave Tshwane a score of 90,41%. This indicates the highest standards in drinking water quality management.

- Pretoria, as one of the components of Tshwane is the administrative capital of South Africa and houses the Union Buildings, where the advent of democracy was ushered in with the inauguration of former president Nelson Mandela in 1994 and where President Jacob Zuma was inaugurated on 9 May 2009.
